One of the major investments in the
field of GIS and AM/FM has been towards Utility
Distribution and Transmission and it has
been the largest investor in GIS in the last decade.
The reason is not difficult to find, since GIS provides
a set of tools which enable their type, location and
maintenance history to be accurately recorded in one
system. The development of plant records, distribution
systems for various facilities like Telecom, Electric,
Gas and Water/Sewer involve massive data capture exercises
underpinned by comprehensive base topographic mapping.
Furthermore, to be operationally useful, companies
dealing with Utility services have also had to invest
in rollout of the systems to thousands of users in
widely dispersed locations. In consequence, most utilities
are only now beginning to exploit the geographical
database of such facilities to improve their management
of these services and plan for future expansion.
RAMTeCH Utilities Management Section
has been in the forefront in providing such facilities
to clients both domestic and international. We understand
the need for timely high-quality conversion facilities
to our clients and have consistently provided facilities
for map inventory and tracking, task control, assignment,
quality feedback, performance monitoring. Apart from
these, remote access has been provided to our clients
so that all stages of the project can be monitored
and timely decisions taken to augment the necessary
changes with little wastage of time. RAMTeCH also
has experience in providing other ancillary services
like data automation, Work Orders, Service Cards that
complement such services.
Some of the projects by RAMTeCH in Utility Distribution
and Transmission have been towards Telecom, Electric,
Gas and Water/Sewer.

With the help of GIS systems, the planning and efficient
management of a large distributive network can be
done effectively, especially towards the framework
for better integration and analysis of relevant facility
information derived from several sources in graphics
environment. RAMTeCH has been using the latest tools
and techniques to integrate a wide range of data from
various sources like scanned maps, scanned drawings,
database integration, etc.
Some of the projects undertaken by RAMTeCH have been:

Telephone Distribution
Network for a Canadian territory containing
approximately 1.5 million terminated lines. Facilities
Data including underground conduit and structures,
feeder cable, distribution cable, CATV cable,
fiber feeder and distribution cables was extracted
from different source documents and recreated
in the mapping system. The original source documents
were schematic and all the data was geo-referenced
on scaled digital base maps. |

GIS provides the facilities for managing the mammoth
task of maintaining every component of the electricity
provider (every line, pole, and meter). With the help
of GIS, it is possible to track and monitor every
component in a digital database. It allows a user
to attach information to each object in a table and
refer to this table whenever required. RAMTeCH has
been actively involved providing such facilities especially
for large service areas especially related to primary
and secondary power distribution system.
Some of the projects undertaken by RAMTeCH have been:
| Ø |
A major North
Eastern United States Utility Corporation
where the project covered an entire service |
| Ø |
A major Eastern United
States Utility Corporation where the
project scope included the primary, secondary,
and underground electrical distribution networks
for the entire service area which included 11,000
miles of conductors, 280,000 poles, 13,000 miles
of ROW and the Underground Distribution System. |

To remain effective in the GIS industry,
it is imperative that the organizations involve itself
in the development of newer technologies. This requires
the ability to meet user specialized needs of major
utility companies especially with relation to gas
distribution. Such information databases not only
involve the integration of spatial and aspatial databases,
engineering information, environmental aspects, socio-economic
data, but brings the cumulative information resources
to each desktop across the organization. RAMTeCH has
been actively involved providing such facilities especially
with relation to the development of customized databases
like Service Cards, Work Orders etc.
Some of the projects undertaken by RAMTeCH have been:

Central Gas
Mains and Service Conversion RAMTeCH
digitized approximately 1400 grid maps for the
eastern area of Central Gas known as “main
conversion”. Source documents for conversion
included grid maps and a digital main cardfile,
containing pipeline attributes, each town having
an individual cardfile. |

Almost all Municipalities are responsible for enhancing
the quality of life through the protection of waters
and lands from pollution by providing responsible
waste management services. The use of new technologies
and innovations through the use of GIS based services
help provide such organizations the ability to provide
a high quality and cost effective environmental service
to the community. RAMTeCH has worked has extensive
work experience with international clients especially
related to the integration of proprietary software
which includes not only capture of graphical and non-graphical
data but also integrate data from other sources liked
GPS data, survey data etc.
Some of the projects undertaken by RAMTeCH have been:

Sewer Network
for a large city in USA as a subcontractor,
where the projects scope was mainly towards the
provision of location and attribute data for the
citywide sewer network. It also included the updation
of the digital sewer mapping system by adding
facilities/areas like major CSO facilities and
tunnels, treatment plant facilities, link plans/
drawings/documents such as As-builts to the sewer
map, populate data in attribute databases, develop
additional applications based on user needs and
linking the sewer map to user databases, update
the city-wide sewer network with accurate location
and attribute data. |
| Ø |
Sewerage Data Set for a
Japanese Gas Company where the project
scope was inclusive of but not restricted to the
scanning of maps, use of proprietary software
for data capture - both spatial and aspatial,
and use of QA/QC techniques as proposed by the
client. |
